If you are the owner of an Android device, then you will be looking for useful Android Apps all the time. So how do you find unique and rare apps to download?
There are, of course, the usual places – Android Market and Amazon Appstore. There are both free and paid apps in these marketplaces.
Largely, they offer similar apps. But both are working hard to secure exclusive apps so that the marketplace becomes more attractive to users.
But Android, being an open source OS, isn’t just limited to Android Market and Amazon Appstore. There are large communities of App developers who are dedicated to developing and releasing useful apps.
These apps may or may not be released in the conventional marketplaces. So where are they released?
They are released in Android related forums and websites such as Android APK.
What is APK?
APK is the extension for Android apps. When you download from marketplaces, you may not be aware that you are in fact downloading APK applications. It’s transparent to the end users. For security reasons, many Android devices has the default setting of only letting you download from official marketplaces such as Android Marketplace and Amazon appstore.
To accept APK downloads, you must first change your phone settings. Go to Settings > Applications > Accept Unknown Sources and you are done.
You may then download APKs and enjoy them!

Many APKs are available for free. The only downside is that since these apps are freely distributed, they may or may not work with the device that you own. The only way an app can improve is to depend on user tests – users like yourself. So it’s common practice for members of the Android community to give back after downloading apps by circling back and leaving feedback on the app. This will give the developers valuable feedback and they may then improve on the apps.
Enjoy!
